SEASON 1 EPISODE 7: YEARNING & NECESSITY

Merry Christmas! We took a little break so Jen V could finish her move, but that just gave us more time to marinate in the feels. We read chapters 41-52 this time and hoo, boy. Yearning, check! Necessity, check!

Sean is trying to reconcile with the fact that he gambled for Corr and lost (or did he…) Puck is a comfort, although she’s a bit shirty about a jacket. We get it. Mutt manages to harass Corr sufficiently enough that he kills someone. Nice one, Mutt. But things are looking up: Malvern finally agrees to sell Corr… on the condition that Sean wins the race. Meanwhile, Puck and Sean are training together, eating November Cakes together, and he offers her a ride on Corr. And then he turns up at her house for dinner. With bread. And declarations. SWOON.

This episode was recorded on 26 December 2020.

Show notes

Happy Christmas if that’s your thing! Also, yes, we know, there’s a lag in publishing. (We’ll catch up in 2025 or something. Soz not soz.)

We’ve been spending our holidays (the break from work) eating really scrumptious food, and watching cheesy holiday movies. It’s us, living our best lives.

Jen V loves a cheesy Christmas movie so if that’s your thing, she recommends Holidate, the Princess Switch, the Princess Switch 2, and she also went to the cinema to see The Happiest Season

Jenn D is just about to watch Last Christmas and finally, after years of somehow not seeing it? She’s gonna watch The Holiday

Jenn D wants you all to know how much she loves Samin Nosrat. Go check out Salt Fat Acid Heat (the cookbook), Salt Fat Acid Heat (the Netflix show), and if you like podcasts, maybe also give Samin’s joint effort with Hrishi Hirway, Home Cooking, a listen, too. Anyway, the buttermilk chicken recipe of Samin’s is now on permanent rotation.

And check out Hrishi Hirway too, just for fun.

Jenn D is reading more Mary Oliver. This time she’s got her mitts on Swan Poetry & Prose Poems and is smitten with “Don’t Hesitate.” Particularly the quotation, “Joy is not made to be a crumb.”

Jen V knew exactly what Jenn D was saying before she even said it. We think the church in Skarmouth (and the Malvern Stables) might look a bit like the stone huts built by the monks of the St Fionan’s Monastery on Skellig Michael.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.

Marginalia Pod is hosted on Podbean and available through the usual podcasting places.

Thank you so much for listening! Next week we’ll be reading chapters 53-58 through the themes of Awareness & Grief.
