SEASON 3 EPISODE 1: EXPECTATIONS

This week kicks off our third season and we are excited! (We really love this podcast, guys. A lot.) Our book this season is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, and our foundational theme for the book is knowledge.

We started big, reading the prologue through chapter 6 through the theme of expectations. We start with the death of a blue girl, and a city in chaos, and then turn our attention toward the unlikely upbringing of our hero, Lazlo Strange, war orphan.

This episode was recorded on 17 April 2021.

Show notes

Our book this season is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, which we’re reading through the foundational theme of knowledge. If you’re reading along with us and want the same copies, we have the hardcover edition, available at Booktopia

Jenn D and Jen V both love T2 tea (peppermint and creme brûlée are featured this week).

Jen V ran a quick D&D campaign for her friends based on the inimitable first Pirates of the Caribbean film. (Worth a watch!) Here’s a great read on Elizabeth Swann.

Educated by Tara Westover - not a book for the faint of heart.

Jenn D has long sung the praises of Summertone furniture. There are a few dedicated collectors out there… here’s a link to an old trade catalogue.

The audiobook of Strange the Dreamer (and Muse of Nightmares) is available on Audible. (Steve West, MVP, also narrated the Sean Kendrick chapters of the Scorpio Races, which is where Jenn D first encountered his excellent auditory skills.)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - a fantastic rom-com.

Ferris Bueller - life comes at you fast.

The Confessional - a podcast by Nadia Bolz-Weber. The episode Jenn D is referring to is lost to the mists of time (but she thinks it may have been the Elizabeth Lesser episode.)

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.

Marginalia Pod is hosted on Podbean and available through the usual podcasting places.

Thanks for listening! Join us next week as we read Chapters 7-13 through the theme of purpose.
