SEASON 1 EPISODE 5: IDENTITY & DESIRE

We’re back this week with chapters 28-32 of The Scorpio Races, and it’s the Scorpio Festival! Grab a November Cake and a nice bracing cup of tea. Jenn D read through the theme of desire while Jen V tackled identity. Puck has to fight the patriarchy just to be allowed to exist, basically (we’re salty about it); Sean gives up on his long-term babysitting gig; and Gabe is a total butthead to Puck. (Gabe.)

This episode was recorded on 6 December 2020.

Show notes

Jen V enjoyed some white chocolate rocky road - lucky her, to have colleagues who make food and share it! There’s a similar recipe here.

Jenn D tells the secret of her infamous gnocchi bake (it is not, in fact, baked). It is quick and delicious and will feed two adults and two kids (or two adults who haven’t had to finish eating what was left in the kids’ lunchboxes as part of their afternoon tea… anyway…)

Ingredients

500g packet of gnocchi

A handful of frozen peas, defrosted (or chuck them in with the pasta)

1 onion (diced)

2-3 rashers of bacon (preferably streaky), diced

300ml cream

A teaspoon of curry powder (or more, it’s your meal, you do you)

Instructions

Cook your bacon and onion in a big frypan over medium-high until the bacon gets crispy edges and the onion is soft and brown and translucent. While that’s happening, fill a saucepan with water, add a few tablespoons of salt, and get that on the stove on high to boil. When your bacon/onion thing is looking good, add 300ml of cream and stir in the curry powder, lowering the temp to medium-low. When your pasta water boils, chuck in the peas, wait two minutes, then chuck in the pasta. When the gnocchi is done, it’ll float to the top of the water. (I don’t even bother with a colander; I just scoop it out with a slotted spoon and chuck it straight into the frying pan with the sauce.) Stir the gnocchi and peas through until it’s all covered in the lovely sauce and serve it up with salt and pepper to taste.

Jen V is enjoying Mallrat this week - an excellent Australian artist worth a listen.

Jenn D can’t get over Joanna Newsom (and probably never will). Ys is her go-to album recommendation but honestly every album is a good yarn in and of itself. Check it out!

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
