SEASON 3 EPISODE 5: DREAMS

This week, we’re reading Chapters 28-34 through the theme of dreams. Thyon is struggling with his alchemy, but Lazlo is there to help, whether he likes it or not. Meanwhile, Suheyla (Eril-Fane’s mum) is a total BAMF and Calixte remains our cheeky fave. Up in the sky, Sarai is despondent when she takes the news of the impending visit to the rest of the Godspawn.... and learns that Minya has been corralling a ghostly army.

This episode was recorded on 16 May 2021.

Show notes

We talk about trauma and memory loss. This reminded Jen V of Michaela Cole’s show I May Destroy You (steaming on Binge/Foxtel in Australia, Neon in New Zealand) and Veronica Mars (which we love).

More about the Library of Alexandria.

Another Shakespeare shout out! Jen V referenced Hamlet’s famous soliloquy and she’d now like to apologise for misappropriating it.

Here’s a link to Swann’s Way, the first volume of Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time.  The quote Jen V read is from Within a Budding Grove, the second volume of the novel:

“When a mind has a tendency toward dreams, it’s a mistake to shield it from them, to ration them. So long as you divert your mind from its dreams, it will not know them for what they are; you will be the victim of all sorts of appearances because you will not have grasped their true nature. If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time.”

If you’re interested in Proust and dreams, here’s an essay.

Jen V mentions Ronan Lynch from Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle and The Dreamer Trilogy

Mentions of Sherlock & John from Sherlock. (For the record Jenn D prefers Elementary).

Jen V has a lot of questions which are answered in the second part of this duology, Muse of Nightmares

Finally, here’s the context for the “What did Caroline do Helen” comment - Lubalin’s amazing internet drama video (originally on tiktok):

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
