SEASON 2 EPISODE 9: HEROISM

We’re storming towards the end this week as we read chapters 17 and 18 through the theme of heroism. Islington needs Door to use the Blackfrairs key to open the door of their prison, so they can leave and stage a coup on Heaven. They uses Richard as leverage to compel her to do so. Richard and the Marquis play Croup and Vandemar off against Islinton, and all hell breaks loose.

This episode was recorded on 20 March 2021.

Show notes

CONTENT WARNING: We discuss the Christchurch terror attack here, so if gun violence, shootings, terrorism are triggering for you, we’re well and truly past that chat by 6:30 into the pod.

You can find out more about the Christchurch terror attack on the Royal Commission page.

The Fred Rogers quote - “Look for the helpers” (Note: this is something Fred Rogers’ mother used to say to him, as a child, to help him cope with distressing events. Context is important, and Fred Rogers spent his entire life, and career, committed to making the world a better and more navigable place for children.)

We agree with Mindy (The Mindy Project) - “Best friend isn’t a person, Danny. It’s a tier.”

We talk about a lot of media in this episode, so have some links!

Harry Potter & The Sacred Text

Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix

The Thick of It - specifically, Malcolm Tucker

Veep (the American Thick of It)

Ted Lasso - highly recommend this great article about accountability in the show.

Schitt’s Creek

Parks & Recreation  - shout out to Ann Perkins for this very relatable sentiment.

30 Rock - Here’s an article about Liz Lemon that unpacks the insidiousness of the “hot mess”. Conversely, Emily Nussbaum is correct when she writes that Liz Lemon was never meant to be a role model because she was a mess from the start.

The phrase Manic Pixie Dream Girl - coined (?) by Nathan Rabin of The AV Club. More here.

And the MPDG examples we mentioned: Garden State, 500 Days of SummerElizabethtown

Pirates of the Caribbean - a solid film that’s actually about Elizabeth Swann. Here’s an article about it!

Jen V mentions a Margaret Atwood quote - “Men are afraid women will laugh at them women are afraid men will kill them.” (It might be apocryphal?)

More on The Law of Hospitality - scroll down to the bit on Celtic law. (...and in terms of TV Tropes, Jenn D found this interesting as well)

And finally, Good Omens (Book) and Good Omens (TV show).

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
