SEASON 2 EPISODE 1: SOCIETY

We live in a society, people! At least that’s what we’re examining this week as we kick off our close reading of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

We meet Richard Mayhew, transplant from small-town Scotland to London. He’s got a kind heart, but we’re not sure if it’s going to do him any favours… especially not after he is tumbled into the world of London Below, simply by helping an injured girl called Door.

This episode was recorded on 23 Janaury 2021.

Show notes

This season we kick off with a new book - Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman! We have copies of the Author’s Preferred Text, and you can locate one here.

You can find the HPST Themes list here.

And we have our own themes list (developed from theirs with our own additions) here! Plus we have a whole new page devoted to our themes so it is easy to find should you need to.

Marquis vs Marquis: Okay. So. In England (and Australia) it is apparently pronounced “MAH-kwiss”. But in America (and obviously France, where the word originates) it’s marr-KEY. Neil Gaiman is British, but he pronounces it with the accent on the second syllable and with a -KEY and not a -kwiss. So: as per his reading of the audiobook, it’s “marr-KEY.”

The Great British Class System: Well, they apparently did a whole study and found SEVEN whole classes, so, here’s that link for you.

Four Weddings and A Funeral - read more about Richard Curtis, writer of the screenplay, admitting he didn’t really flesh out the character of Carrie (ed note: Jenn D would like to interject here: I KNEW IT.)

“Somebody Else’s Problem”, or the SEP field - a Douglas Adams invention. Here’s the wikipedia entry, but, really, you should just read the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy series.

Also, this…

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
