SEASON 1 EPISODE 10: HERITAGE & SACRIFICE

It’s hard to say goodbye to Thisby, but our time with this text is through. We reflect on the last three chapters and how much the characters have grown, and how much we’ve learned through our shared practice of slowing down and talking it through with each other each week. It’s made us better readers, for sure (but we still reserve the right to buzz through books as fast as we can).

This episode was recorded on 6 Janaury 2021.

Show notes

Jen V has finally (finally) finished The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and though it’s not a duology, but a trilogy (argh! more waiting!!), she is glad to have read it.

Jenn D is deep into her Avatar: The Last Airbender rewatch with her daughter and loving it sick. Sokka is her favorite. (We love and support our favorite boomerang-wielding meteor-sword making, always actually right goofy big bro.)

When we talk about good breakups, we mention Ted and Alexis from Schitt’s Creek. Highly recommend watching this show. We both love it. EW. DAVID. NO. Iconic.

Jenn D couldn’t remember what it’s called, but the thing where you don’t see pictures in your head? It does have a name: aphantasia. It’s really neat to learn about, especially if it just seems completely unfathomable (like it does to Jenn D, who is constantly playing a movie in her brain). You can also read a first-hand account about this here.

Learn more about the Isle of Skye.

And about King Island, an island to the northwest of Tasmania, where all the good cheese comes from.

And Iona, where the Abbey of St Columba is.

We’re having a little break but you won’t even notice - we’ll be back next week with the first episode of season two. We’re reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman!

We’ve decided to read the entire book through one major theme (Compassion) as well as a weekly theme. We’ll be starting our Neverwhere close reading through the theme of Society, with the prologue and chapters one and two.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
