SEASON 1 EPISODE 2: HOME & FAMILY

In this episode we cover chapters 1-10 of The Scorpio Races through the themes of Home & Family. We meet Sean as an adult (what a fella!), and we are introduced to the orphaned Connollys - Puck, Gabe, and Finn. (Gabe is not our favorite.) We also learn more about the water horses, aka the capaill uisce, the man-eating murder horses that turn up halfway through October to thrill and terrify the residents of Thisby (current record-holder for best invented Atlantic island ever). Also, what is up with the Malverns?

This episode was recorded on 14 November 2020.

Show notes

Jen V loves her local cafe, Sixes & Sevens - best donuts in Wellington, just saying!

We spend some time talking about one of our very favorite literary tropes: found family (or family of choice). Learn more about it here.

We consult the Oxford English Dictionary (aka, Jenn D’s girlfriend).

Jen V talks about Te Reo Maori - the Drops language app offers Te Reo Maori.

Emma Jean Kelly wrote a bit about teaching through the concept of people belonging to a place here.

Michael Marshall-Smith, Only Forward, is the source of the quote about roads being different, which Jenn D slightly misremembered.

“Imagine a road you know well, the one your apartment is on, or the road to the stores or something. Now picture yourself walking down it. Think of the buildings, the trees if there are any, the cracks in the pavement, the way the journey looks and feels.

Done that? Okay, now do the same, but coming up the road. Feels different, doesn’t it? I don’t just mean in the obvious way: the road you’re walking up or down feels actually different, seems like a different road. Sure, you know it’s the same, but how does it actually look, how does it feel?”

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out at here.

We’ll catch you next week when we read chapters 11-19 through the themes of Belonging & Vulnerability.
